Events to explain support and funding available for innovators in 2010

South West companies will be able to learn how to access over £1 billion of public funding for innovation at a series of forthcoming Innovation Forum events being held across the region in 2010. Delegates will be able to educate themselves on what business support is available and suitable for their business all in one day by attending our workshop sessions and exhibition. Organisations in attendance will be:

Grant for R&D, TSB Collaborative Research, FP7, Eurostars, Enterprise Europe Network, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, R&D Tax Credits, TSB Small Business Research Initiative, South West Design Programme, UK Intellectual Property Office, South West Angel Investors Network, Business Link and South West Universities

As well as hearing inspirational case studies and presentations about the key support available to companies, delegates will also benefit from one-to-one meetings. The event could be the first step in helping get new ideas and innovations off the drawing board and into production. Robin Gallimore, Chair of the South West Science and Industry Council, said:

“Innovation Forums are one of the ways we are trying to help companies to innovate their way to success. The programmes on offer allow businesses to research and develop new technologies and processes which will increase productivity and profit.

In these challenging times, innovation continues to be essential for the region’s economy and will be a key element of our path to recovery.”

Innovation Forums will be held at the following locations between 9:30am and 4pm. Please click on the appropriate link to register. Further details of the events will be sent to you nearer the event in question.

Bournemouth 24th June (in collaboration with the Bournemouth Uni Festival of ideas & Innovation)

South West Moorings Test Facility

Launched 2nd July 2009

National Maritime Museum, Falmouth

The South Western Mooring Tests Facility (SWMTF) is a unique installation funded by the South West RDA and ERDF. The facility aims to significantly aid the research and development of suitable mooring configurations for wave energy devices in support of wave energy device developers and the South West RDA’s Wave Hub project. The test facility will be deployed in Falmouth Bay and for the first time will allow researchers to understand the dynamic behaviour of a moored structure in realistic sea environment at large scale.

Business Briefing: Marine Renewable Energy in the South West

Tuesday 9th September 2008

This event provides an opportunity for individuals and companies in Cornwall and the South West of England to discover more about emerging marine renewable technologies and explore the potential for their involvement in the industry. The Wave Hub development provides a unique opportunity for the South West to become a major centre for development of marine technology, including the industrial and employment opportunities that go with it. In parallel with the Wave Hub, PRIMaRE seeks to deepen the academic and industrial knowledge base in the region through research and collaboration with industrial actors.

The aim of this day event is to provide an initial briefing to companies in the South West about this rapidly emerging industry and the business opportunities it will represent. The event will focus on the development issues for wave and tidal energy. Emphasis will be given to presenting the research and development capacity within PRIMaRE that will contribute to opportunities for collaboration with companies.

Topics to be covered include: resource assessment; numerical modelling; moorings and foundations; power technology and electrical infrastructure; testing; environmental assessment. PRIMaRE comprises experts across the range of disciplines relevant to the burgeoning marine energy sector and there will be ample opportunities to discuss your interests with relevant representatives throughout the day.

If you would like further information about this event or PRIMaRE, please contact enquiries@primare.orgor telephone 0800 052 5600.

Inaugural Lecture Tidal Effects on Beaches - a Field Experimenters Perspective

Thursday 22nd May 2008 at 6.00pm

Devonport Lecture Theatre, Portland Square, Plymouth Campus

It is often considered that ocean waves are the dominant agent in shaping sand and gravel beaches. On most beaches in the world, however, and especially in the UK, the spring tidal range is several times greater than the average wave height. Such large tides exert a significant influence on beach morphology by affecting surf zone currents and nearshore sediment transport processes.

Drawing on 15 years of field experiments on beaches, Professor Masselink outlines in this lecture the role of tides on beaches. Some tidal effects are merely the result of the shifting of the water level up and down the beach due to the tide and are easily understood and quantified. Other effects, however, are unique to tidal beaches and their discovery, elucidation and quantification require dedicated field measurements.

Current numerical models of nearshore processes and beach morphological change have attained a level of sophistication and spatial resolution that cannot be attained by field observations; nevertheless, it will be argued that field work remains the key research activity to help us understand beach processes and morphology.
