In the Research Excellence Framework 2014 98 per cent of our research was rated as of international quality. This resulted in the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) awarding us an extra £3.8million for research, the third highest gain amongst English universities.

Offshore renewable energy

The Offshore Renewable Energy group has the principal capabilities: Resource Assessment, Marine Operation and Hydrodynamics, and Offshore Reliability; and is actively engaged with wave energy developers and has a number of ongoing collaborative research projects, funded by the TSB, EPSRC, ETI and Carbon Trust. Furthermore we are a core partner in leading research consortium SuperGen Marine and in the IDCORE industrial doctoral program.

Test facilities and capabilities

The group has access to the conventional laboratory facilities, including materials testing and workshops but also has significant specialist resources applicable to the renewable energy sector. Most of these are unique facilities relating to ocean energy research, reliability and field studies. These have relevance both for fundamental research and industrial projects.

These facilities include:

•    The South West Mooring Test Facility (SWMTF)
•    Falmouth Bay Nursery test site (FaB Test)
•    Dynamic Marine Component Test Rig (DMaC)
