Engineering – Renewable Energy (Cornwall)

This post is available immediately on a part time (50% FTE) basis for 24 months and will support the work of Prof Lars Johanning.

The posts supports a successful H2020 MaRINET 2 application with a focus on engineering life and durability studies towards Offshore Renewable Energy sub-sea systems and components

The post will include informing about relevant testing processes and potential new procedures to quantify the structural integrity, failure rates and engineering design life of the materials used and subsystems/ components and deliver testing practices which improve quantification of these. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will have extensive knowledge in physical measurements, numerical modelling and data analysis; an understanding in component testing procedures. Furthermore, they will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.  At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, the successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in an offshore engineering related subject and be able to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

The successful candidate will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade E) or Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role.  Candidates should demonstrate their achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.

Cornwall will appeal if you wish to work in beautiful surroundings with plenty of opportunities for sporting and outdoor activities. The campus is a few minutes’ walk from Penryn and only 10 minutes from Falmouth, which is the centre of Cornwall’s creative scene, with businesses, studios, shops and galleries, and great live music across the town. Falmouth’s seven beaches, beautiful rivers and the world-famous marina also make it a haven for those who love sand, sailing and surf. The University will also assist with relocation costs and support where required.

Starting salaries at the appropriate grades are Postdoctoral Research Associate on Grade E from £28,452 - £32,958 per annum. Postdoctoral Research Fellow on Grade F from £33,943 - £38,183 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.
