Catherine Lloyd ECR-TG - 4th AWTEC Conference

I applied for the PRIMaRE Early Career Researchers Travel Grant (ECR-TG) to enable me to travel to the 4th Asian Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (AWTEC) in Taipei, Taiwan. This is the 4th AWTEC and is held every other year with the preceding conferences being held in Korea (2012), Japan (2014) and Singapore (2016). These conferences provide a forum to promote the discussion of technological advances and allow knowledge exchange between industrial partners and academic researchers in the Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) field.

My paper entitled “Development of a Wave-Current Numerical Model using Stokes 2nd Order Theory” was accepted by the AWTEC committee and I was given the opportunity to make an oral presentation on the first day of the conference. The main body of my research uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to create numerical models to assess the effect that regular waves superimposed upon tidal currents, can have on a marine device. The numerical model is developed using ANSYS CFX 18.0 and uses a homogenous multiphase model with volume fractions to define the 2 phases (air and water) used in the free surface model. The tidal current is input at the inlet as a uniform velocity flow with the regular waves superimposed on top. The waves are generated at the model inlet by using CFX Expression Language (CEL) to input expressions for the horizontal and vertical velocity components using Stokes 2nd Order Theory. The numerical model results are compared to theoretical and experimental wave data for 3 different wave characteristics in 2 different depth tanks. These comparisons highlighted the similarity between the numerical models and the respective theoretical and experimental data sets. Therefore, this study has shown that the modelling procedure used can accurately replicate ocean wave-current conditions providing a potential substitute to experimental flume or tank testing.

As well as the technical aspects of the conference, I was able to experience the traditional culture Taiwan had to offer, as well as the dynamic city of Taipei. This conference was a great platform at which I could present my work and I would hope to return to the 5th AWTEC in Tasmania (2020).
