Shanshan Cheng ECR-TG - JABACO Workshop

The travel fund provided by PRIMARE enabled me to attend the JABACO workshop held in Edinburgh on 03 December 2018. The JABACO project is aimed at developing a Modular Jacket concept composed by components of pre-qualified quality, for cost reduction of offshore wind farms. The concept envisions integrated design considering water depths 30-80m for turbine sizes of 5-10 MW. The research project is funded by EU-RFCS. The JABACO workshop held in Edinburgh is one of the deliverables in the project, which aims to bring together researchers in the relevant field, share the project outcomes, and network with others. The workshop was well attended not only by academics, but also by industrial leaders. It ran from 8.30am to 4.30pm, with 10 technical presentations including two invited lectures. All presentations focused on the design, analysis, fabrication, and testing of welded steel jacket foundations. The workshop was highly related to the research I’m carrying out at the University of Plymouth. I have learnt a lot from the presentations, and also got the chance to introduce my work to others. Through the workshop I have met many excellent researchers from this field, including academic staff at the University of Edinburgh, and some researchers/project partners from other European countries.

Apart from attending the JABACO workshop, I also had a chance to meet up with my contact, Dr Yuner Huang at the University of Edinburgh, to discuss potential research proposals we can do together for the CAMREG flexi fund, and other funding calls
