Federica Buriani ECR-TG - 2018 INORE Symposium

I attended the International Network on Offshore Renewable Energy (INORE) Symposium 2018 in Scotland from 21st to 27th October. We started in Edinburgh, to then move to Aviemore, the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The activities prepared for this symposium ranged from poster sessions, talks, and indoor group work, to outdoor team-building activities, and cultural and technical visits.

On Monday morning we visited Nova Innovation, a tidal energy industry in Edinburgh and the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility at the University of Edinburgh. After that, we departed for Levenmouth where we visited the ORE Catapult Demonstration Turbine which is the world’s most advanced, open access, offshore wind turbine dedicated to research. We arrived at Badaguish Cairngorm Outdoor Centre, Aviemore around 19:00 where we were welcomed by Tim Hurst, the Wave Energy Scotland (WES) Managing Director.

On Tuesday we had a morning poster session before heading to Loch Morlich for some outdoor activities. Windsurfing was definitely a great fun! Another poster session in the evening together with a talk from Simec Atlantis Energy (SAE) and finally a presentation from one of the attendee.

On Wednesday morning-afternoon we had a cultural visit to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle and we spent the rest of the day challenging our intellect and pushing the competition limits in the Wave Energy Scotland Big Challenge, which consisted in a team work to design and build a WEC with some available materials (such as polystyrene balls, magnets, plastic tubes, copper wires etc.). Each WEC has been tested in a “rudimental wave tank” using a voltmeter to measure the energy generation. Attendee presentations in the evening.

On Thursday we had poster sessions and two interesting courses (the first on LCOE and the second on numerical modelling). Also we played Tag rugby which was very funny.

Friday was the collaborative task day during which six industry reps presented themselves and six different tasks (one each). We divided in groups and selected a task to work on during the day. I chose to work on Cheros Collaborative Task: definition of the control system architecture for a farm of Poly-OWCs. After an interesting brain storming we produced a ppt presentation to show our ideas to the audience. My team won the challenge! Best collaborative task!

This was my second INORE Symposium, another great success for this wonderful community of graduate students and early-career professionals. Thanks again to PRIMaRE for supporting the travel to this event through an Early Career Research Travel Grant (ECR-TG).
